St. Maarten was voted as one of the top 10 ‘Best Islands in the World’ by US News. The ‘Friendly Island,’ which boasts 37 beaches, more than 365 restaurants and a plethora of day and nighttime diversions has something for everyone, making it a great getaway destination. No fly and flop holidays here – it would be crazy not to take advantage of all there is to see and do.
“As a destination we are greatly honored to make the list as one of the top 10 ‘Best Islands in the World’ by US News. It is a great achievement for St. Maarten and we appreciate the support from the millions of travelers that visit us throughout the years,” said May-Ling Chun, interim Director of Tourism for the St. Maarten Tourist Bureau.
One of the many reasons to visit the island is for the world-class sailing. I visited the 32nd annual Regatta recently, and looking forward to watching the ESPN Caribbean special feature which showcases the highlights and history of the competition, as well as the beauty and culture of the island. I thought I had a lot of luggage, but when I stood in line beside the ESPN photographers at the airport check in, my case looked like a doll’s purse.
The ESPN Caribbean special gives viewers a first-hand account of the competition on board one of the event’s main contenders, as well as a behind the scenes view of boats from the past that have been restored to their original beauty. The vintage sailboats are truly a labor of love and absolutely stunning to see. The robust parties held before and after the Regatta were highlighted….the music was fabulous, and the dancing went on and on!
The annual St. Maarten Heineken Regatta has become a world-wide, one-of-a-kind sailing event with exciting entertainment, musical performances and parties that has attracted tens of thousands of sailors and enthusiasts over the years. This International event plays host to more than 32 countries and over 180 entries, making it the largest regatta in the region. The actual competition consists of round-the-buoys contests and point-to-point destination races against the backdrop of St. Maarten’s breathtaking coastal views. I can’t wait to see it next year! The 33RD Annual Heineken Regatta will be held February 28 – March 3, 2013.
